What does "grep -i buffer /var/log/Xorg.0.log" return? You can try by editing "/etc/default/grub" file and search for "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX" and/or "GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX" parameters, tweak them as required (remember to run "update-grub" after any change).
