The problem seemed to be with xine. Although it finds all libraries and plug-
ins it cannot connect to the audio device when set on "audio"="auto".
I set "audio"="pulseaudio" and it works BUT that doesn't change anything for 
kaffeine - still "audio device unavailable". The nice twist is: under Settings 
in kaffeine there is almost nothing to be set. No devices - nothing.
I played around with phonon setup - everything works, no hitch - anyway 
kaffeine refuses to connect to any audio device.

For the time being I'll live kaffeine-free. Have no time to spend.
