That is certainly possible, but a bit inflexible.  Using a partition
table (classic DOS-compatible or GPT) might be better.

You probably want to run tune2fs(8) with the -m, -c and -i options on
the newly created filesystem, since the mke2fs defaults are not really
optimal for such big disks.
