I think I have found the problem :-) I installed php5-curl on my sid desktop which worked fine. The problem appears to be that the /etc/php5/apache2/conf.d directory isn't symlinked in Debian 5 and 6 (after a dist-upgrade): Anyone knows when this changed? This was not the default configuration in Debian 5 and I couldn't find any reference in the release notes/documentation.
