This sounds like the file permissions are set preventing access. I would start there. $ ls -ld /var/games /var/games/nethack $ ls -l /var/games $ ls -ld /usr/bin/hearse I suspect that with the above information the reason for the problem could be deduced. If not then it is at least a place to start. BTW... The /var/games directory is setgid to the 'games' group so that new directories and new files created within it will also be set to the 'games' group. Many of the programs in /usr/games/* are also setgid to the 'games' group. This enables them to have a UPG (user-private-group) in which to share data such as score files and bones files. Bob
