For my GNOME2 GDM3, instead of GDM is installed by default. When I mark 'gdm' to install by Synaptic, I got that 'gdm3' should be removed and 'libdmx1' should be installed. Backup your Debian and test if GDM does or doesn't solve the issue ;). I suspect you've got GDM3 installed too?! Next time I shout down, I'll take care, if it's the same here on a tower PC.
