Upgrading Lenny -> Squeeze

I've been following the instructions at
<URL:http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/release-notes/ch-upgrading.en.html >
and got to the part "4.4.5. Upgrading the kernel and udev". As suggested
I did this in stages, I've done "apt-get install linux-image-2.6-amd64"
and then moved on to "apt-get install udev". Then I got this:

WARNING: this version of the GNU libc requires kernel version
2.6.18 or later. Please upgrade your kernel before installing
glibc.

The installation of a 2.6 kernel _could_ ask you to install a new libc
first, this is NOT a bug, and should *NOT* be reported. In that case,
please add lenny sources to your /etc/apt/sources.list and run:
  apt-get install -t lenny linux-image-2.6
Then reboot into this new kernel, and proceed with your upgrade
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/ libc6_2.11.2-10_amd64.deb (--unpack):
 subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1

The kernel I'm running is 2.6.8-12, and the reason I'm running nothing newer is that, for some reason, a stock kernel won't boot my system (IBM eServer x226). It's either the SCSI disks or SCSI interface that's don't have modules or aren't compiled in, and I haven't got around to figuring out what they are and building a custom kernel.

As you can see I'm part way through the upgrade. If I do as suggested am
I going to have a broken system?

It looks like I've got to DL kernel source >= 2.6.18, build a custom kernel (am I going to have a problem here as I've already upgraded most system tools?), boot from the new kernel, then run the libc6 upgrade. Could I build a custom kernel using latest sources and that be my new kernel in Squeeze or are there changes between Lenny and Squeeze that mean a Lenny kernel is no good with Squeeze?

Thank you for any comments or suggestions.
