By the way, it should be

   auto eth0

in /etc/network/interfaces. "allow-hotplug" makes only sense, if the network
card is removable like, e.g., a pcmcia ethernet adapter.

Maybe, Scott Ferguson is right: the DHCP server "could" have just run out of 
leases.
