Sure. I'd say digests are for reading more than replying.

In addition, there are some MUAs that can extract individual messages
from digests. Emacs gnus does this.

But does it set proper References headers so as not to break threading, or does it just strip unnecessary quoted text and sets a proper Subject header? (Which are good things, but not sufficient.)
