I'm guessing from the gedit that you're running Gnome?
Have you tried gksu and gksudo
eg:-
#gksu gedit (will work if installed)

Alternatively you could try:-
$xhost +  (might not work)
then su and run graphic editor.
NOTE: security risk, but doesn't survive a reboot.
Can be made permanent, and I haven't tried this with anything later than
Lenny.
