I second that. As much as I don't like using proprietary software, going
to a computer lab at the university here and using MS Word to convert a
file to a more suitable format was often the only way to use a layout
file. The only other way would have been to reject using the file
altogether which I unfortunately cannot afford to do. If you find a
computer lab that has Office 2007 or newer installed, you can even save
the file directly to Open Document. It's not using Open Document in
exactly the same way as OOo and LibreOffice but it has always worked for
me so far.
