I'm afraid you have lost the real beep, not only under emacs but on the whole system :-? Hum... I'm starting to remember that GNOME changed something related to this not so far ago and now canberra handles this. (searching...) Here it is one bug opened for this matter: Metacity should not handle sounds for system bell events https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=607906 So maybe we have to focus in making emacs to play fine with canberra but I'm totally lost here, let's see if someone else can provide any tip.
