I've found it useful for removing unwanted and/or broken applications (--detect-pua --detect-broken) as well as viruses and spam. I had some erratic behaviour in my computer a while back, and clamav helped resolve it. I think it's a mistake to assume that if a computer is Linux that it's invincible.
