This idea doesn't seem > like a good idea to me. > In fairness to Ubuntu, I've been dist-upgrading since 8.10, and then use the update-manager to do it since it was introduced and, although I've occasionally had to make a few fixes afterwards, it's been a pretty smooth process for me. I know a lot of others on the lists didn't have quite such an easy time though!
As for the x-grade, it was pretty disastrous in the end, and after about an hour of messing with init I gave up.
