Hi, the "tear free desktop" feature enables automatically the vertical
refresh sync, that's why glxgears is giving you roughly the same
frame-rate as your display refresh frequency. This is not an indication
of an absolute drop in performances.
You don't tell us which desktop environment you are using, but I know
that this tear-free "feature" is inducing rendering bugs with kwin (kde)
compositing, sometimes simply crashing it, and it may be the same with
others D-E.
