No, as far as i can tell, X is not trying to start at boot - i have not installed packages such as X/G/KDM, which do that. As you can see from my other mail in this thread (with changed subject line), i have narrowed down the problem to the package xserver-xorg-video-intel. When that package is installed, even if i select "recovery mode" at the grub prompt, i eventually reach a black screen.
