Most modern linux systems automatically manage that, no need to tweak or setup nothing. I've always experienced problems for installing GRUB in the first attempt, I mean, on standard disks. When it fails, I select "do not install a bootloader" and get it from another source (i.e., SuperGrubDisk). Expert installer should ask for the GRUB version to install.
