Depending on what you want to do with it you might choose not to install X (the graphical user enivironment) though, but that's up to you. Let us know what you'll be using this machine for and most probably you'll get sound advice on what choices are appropriate for your situation. One thing: depending on your level of skills with computers Debian GNU/Linux might not be the easiest first step in the world of Linux for you.
