It is atypical as it is not webmail! Very few people today are using something they access via POP3 or IMAP, and even most of those aren't running on their desktop but rather at the company. I personally use the POP3 / SMTP of my website host, as I hate webmail (but gmail is great for mailing lists). But people are surprised when they discover that I can't just check and send mail from any computer with a web browser. Most people don't even know that there is an alternative to webmail.
