If a packet is lost, it results in an upper layer retransmission which will back off retires in an exponential fashion, e.g., the first retry may wait 2 seconds, then 4, then 8, then 16, etc.
You can try tracing your connection with Wireshark which I believe has an analysis tool which will show you if there are retransmissions.
