The only answer I could find was to put this line into my .bash_profile and .bashrc files:
setterm -blength 0 That "solved" the problem without actually solving anything. How the latest kernels get around not even having the hardware pcspkr module loaded baffles me. Easy enough to fix on a tower, just pull the jumper off the mobo. But with a laptop, that's not possible.
