Thanks to a comment discovered via current emails from Simon McVittie about bug reports, I replaced inetutils-inetd and inetutils-telnetd with openbsd-inetd and telnetd. Presto, telnet and daytime work again. Magic! Perhaps I'll stumble on an analogous solution for openvpn one day. For today my hobby time is consumed. Regards, ...
