If they are unnecessary modules, the kernel won't load them in the first place, as the hardware they interface with doesn't exit. If they're not loaded, how can you unload them? I think you need to provide us with _your_ definition of "unnecessary". If you're really that concerned about kernel footprint and performance, you can always roll your own kernel, as I do, building in the drivers you know you need, none that you don't, and disable loadable module support.
