I think synaptic can show you all the files that a package installs (maybe it's under "properties" or something similar). If you can determine the name of the executable file, check it's manpage. You can also check in /usr/share/doc/packagename for info. This kind of program may be meant to run automatically on login, rather than clicking on it in a menu.
