Are you using Debian Live?  If so, the partition needs to be labelled as
"live-rw".  

tune2fs -L live-rw /dev/sdXY  (whatever your partion device is)

Then you need to boot with the "persistent" or "persist" parameter (I
can't remember off the top of my head which is correct).
