I tried the 10.10 beta not long ago, and for some reason it wouldn’t let me set my /home below 8gigs, considering I was installing on a very small vbox HDD just to test, I wasn’t amused. The Ubuntu installer might be more "shiny" than the debian one, and i would say a bit easier for the total linux newbie, but I have directed friends to debian and they haven’t had any problems installing it, be it the squeeze alpha 1 installer or others.
