The mysql-server package says (e.g., in /usr/share/doc/mysql-server/README.Debian) to set the MySQL root user password using:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password' However, when I try that, it asks for a password. So what is the password I need to enter to set the password?
