I did a lot of experimenting with different framebuffer settings recently, and with some of the experiments I saw the same green color as you are describing. In the end I determined that the pale green color was due to the color depth portion of the framebuffer mode. For example, the following setting will produce that pale green color: GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x16 But if you change the color depth to 24 or 32, everything turns out better: GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x24 I noticed in your description of the solution, that you did not specify a color depth one way or another.
