Check the /etc/hosts file.  It should have a line like this:

127.0.0.1  mycomputer localhost

If it doesn't, then you need to add it.

Past that, you may wish to check the bugs filed against the amavisd-new 
package.  Unless you're running a very busy site, the amavis-ng package 
is probably the better choice.

I must be missing some configuration setting of somekind somewhere...
