First idea would be keyboard country in X, but I bet you thought about that?
Thierry

Thanks for the idea Thierry! As I'm in the U.S., I plead ignorance on what other countries must go through to make changes -- could you give me direction on how to check the "keyboard country" in X?

I see in an older version of Debian (on this older alternate computer used as substitute right now) that the xorg.conf file contains some option lines specifying "XkbdLayout" as "us". This option is not in my troubled computer xorg.conf file and temporarily inserting it did not change or cure the problem.

Thanks,
Don
