This was the main reason for nVidia to support their "nv" driver : offering correct user experience (i.e. avoid the Vesa driver) just after the installation of the OS, and until they install their proprietary driver for full functionnality. However, with the state of the (open-source) "Nouveau" driver, there is no real reason anymore for nVidia to support "nv"...
