If I understand your needs, one such tool that has been receiving lots
of good reviews is OpenShot [1], and it has been recently packaged for
Debian [2] (still in sid, but anyways...)!

There's also Kdenlive [3], which is also supposed to be very good, and
is also available from the repos.
