I have had the same problem recently.  PDF's seem to be sent to the
printer, but nothing gets printed.

This is up-to-date Lenny, with CUPS 1.3.11-1+b1, and a Brother HL5250DN
printer, which suggests that the problem is not with CUPS itself or the
printer or printer drivers.  Something like conversion to postscript
maybe.  I have no pdftops installed.  (I suppose a2ps is what would be
used on my system.)  It used to work fine, but no more.  I work around it
by converting to postscript some other way and printing the .ps file.
