Well, I'm not familiar with your setup, but you may have a router or a dedicated machine somewhere that handles your link to the outer world (i.e. your ISP). In that case, disconnecting the ethernet cable from your box only takes care of your box, but the router/gateway remains exposed to the banes of Internet.
