In recent kernels (2.6.31?) a lot of previously included firmwares have been moved to separate packages (firmware-linux-nonfree in this specific case).
Since this will make a lot of users unhappy[0] the installer offers to install the additional firmware, probably from some external source, like a USB stick or similar.
