I always just say 'cp -a .* <destination dir>' in addition to what you already did to copy (recursively) everything beginning with a period. If there are switches to do this, I've missed them in my reading of the man page. (Where 'a' here means 'archive mode', not 'all' as it does with ls :-) It might also help if you think of mounting as "on" rather than "in".
