The following will open a new tab in a running iceweasel or open a new
instance as necessary:
if firefox -remote "ping()" >/dev/null 2>&1
then
firefox -remote "openURL($1,new-tab)"
else
firefox "$1" &
fi
Use iceweasel instead of firefox if you prefer.
