you probably need to see what errors might be generated by rox/emelfm when you try to open these files from within them. That may give a clue as to what is going on. YOu could look in .xsession-errors or on the VT you launch X from, if appropriate, but your best bet is probably to restart rox/emelfm from a terminal so that you can capture any output generated. If things works as expected from the command line, then it's probably safe to say that the mount options is not the problem. Unless rox (haven't used it in a couple of year) is automounting the usb sticks for you in some other location that you aren't aware of? maybe?
