Between releases, stable is only updated to fix RC bugs.  To do so, a patch is 
backported to the upstream release that stable was released with.  RC bugs 
resolved as fast as reasonably possible, although they are tested (proposed-
updates) before hitting the stable repository.  If your patch fixes an RC bug, 
make sure the bug has been reported in the Debian BTS and that the patch is 
atteched to that bug.

A release involves making a new stable as a snapshot of testing.

If you need newer software than was released with stable, you can use 
(packages from) backports, testing, unstable, or experimental, but they have 
less stability "guarantees".  If you decide to try and run a mixed system, I
