Nowadays, power management is important for all machines nowadays, and the experience gained with laptops taught us how to save energy wihout impacting the performance. Also reducing the frequency when the load is sufficiently low will not only reduce your electricity bill, but also the temperature of your CPU and the speed at which the fans spin.
