Andrei .... After applying the method you outlined above along with replacing exim4 by nullmailer, the boot time for the Debian 5.0 Lenny system I use has significantly improved .... Now from grub to kdm login screen is about 30-35 seconds .... Whoo Hoo ! I think the major bottle-neck here may have been with exim4 as there has always been a very pregnant pause just before exim4 showed up in the boot process listing which has carried over for me through Sarge, Etch, and now Lenny ....
