I recently reinstalled Debian Sid on my laptop, both to remove cruft and to move to full disk encryption (similar to Manoj's setup - everything except /boot on lv's on top of a luks encrypted partition). The system on the whole seems leaner and snappier, but one major performance hit that I seem to notice is that suspending to disk is *much* slower. I don't have actual numbers or proper benchmarks, but I have the impression that it's something like half as fast, or even slower. I don't know for sure that this is related to the encryption; I suppose that there may have been some other critical change, or it may even be subjective, and all or partly in my head ...
