Absolutely no need of multicore, rather, a single fast processor would
be of use for scientific purposes as parallelized codes are rare

If I wanted the fastest-available single-core CPU, I'd look for
these on Ebay:
Pentium D 900 at 3.4 GHz
Pentium 4 6X1 at 3.8 GHz
