The DSL modem is provided by the ISP. It provides DHCP for
the computer to get an IP address. When connected as
follows:

Computer --- DSL modem -- Internet

the computer gets its other network settings
via DHCP (whether Debian, XP or Mac OSX -- I tried all
three!)

I don't see why I would need any different settings.
