Tried to post this to the rsync list but the subscribe connection failed

Just installed rsync 3.0.3-2 and tried to backup to a usb drive using a
script:
rsync -vaHz --exclude '/proc' --exclude '/sys' -- exclude '*.iso'
Look *very* *carefully* at this line.
--exclude '/media' / /media/disk/laptop
and see how it differs from this line.
This is the same script, with the exception of the "laptop" directory,
that I use successfully to back up my Ubuntu partitions. The problem is
that despite the --exclude '/media', rsync insists on backing up the
/media directory. I tried running it as <user> and as <root> with the
same results. A cursory search of the logs turned up nothing. Neither
did a search on "rsync --exclude not honored".
Not sure where to start trouble shooting. Any pointers appreciated.
