If you have a proper work flow with threaded view, that's just as little effort as having the whole content repeated. In fact it is _less_ effort. The main point is, though, that on such a high traffic/many readers mailing list like debian-user, it is _not_ practical/convenient/efficient/etc. if everyone behaves as she/he prefers for her/himself. Just as in other walks of live it greatly helps, if all involved adhere to some common standard just to make live easier for everyone. The standard and proper way on Debian mailing lists is to bottom post and trim.
