That was my immediate reaction to your query, as well. Take a look at
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/580 for a quick intro.
But you might want to look at the man page for update-rc.d (should
already be installed), and google "rcconf" which is a front-end for
update-rc.d.
But sysvconfig is probably easier.
