It is possible to have high uptimes even on a desktop running testing, 
and you can make use of checkrestart (in package debian-goodies) after 
every update and restart the relevant applications.

You should reboot if you update the kernel though (or if there have been 
some important updates), just to make sure the new kernel/system will 
boot correctly.
