I bought Edirol 1A-UA as the most basic external sound card. It has been perfect for the job of converting all analogue audio via RCA. As for working with linux, out of the box. I got it when Sarge was in testing, and it has always been recognised as /dev/dsp1. Not sure if it is still on the market but there are plenty of equivalents.
