Hi List

In KDE3.5.5, running on Etch whenever I load a USB data stick, it triggers OpenOffice.org's splash screen and then reports that media:/sda1 does not exist.

The same USB stick loads fine and is accessible in Gnome, so it would seem restricted to KDE and I suspect that somewhere along the line a file association error has been made. However, going into KControlCentre/ Components/ File Associations and changing the order of actions associated with a mounted removable device to "open file", clicking apply, the system updates its settings. But the problem persists, and when I go back into KControlCenter, etc. OOo is at the top of the list of associations again. This is the same regardless of whether or not I go in via sudo or as a regular user.

How can I fix this? Any pointers would be gratefully appreciated.

If I remember correctly (I have KDE 4.2 now, so I cannot check anymore),
the most important settings are the ones here:

K-Menu > Control Center > Peripherals > Storage Media

What worked best for me was to configure KDE to initially "Do Nothing"
for mounted and unmounted USB sticks; this meant that the devices were
only mounted and opened when I clicked their icons on the desktop. (The
icons on the desktop can be configured in Control Center > Desktop >
Behavior > Device Icons.)

If you absolutely cannot fix this behavior then it is advisable to
generate a new user and test how KDE reacts to USB devices when you run
it as that user; this should help to distinguish a general problem of
your system from a misconfiguration tied to your normal user's account.

Hi Florian

I tried going via the Kcontrol route as you suggested, and there are only 2 options: "open in a new window" and "do nothing". I cannot change the order of these options. The USB stick still throws up the error message.

Onto the second suggestion. I created a new user and the USB stick opened as one would expect - a new window and no OOo. It would seem therefore to be related to the existing user, but the apparent options for doing anything about it seem very limited. Is there an *rc file in the bowels of KDE that I can edit perhaps? I looked through the available directories in .kde and couldn't see anything appropriate, but then that is probably me not knowing really what I am looking for.

So, one option would be to transfer the existing user's home directory, etc. to a new account. This seems potentially like a lot of work, or I could encourage the user to make a transition to using Gnome, which she doesn't seem unduly keen on doing. Any other thoughts that I could try out in this case?

Thanks for your input.

Cheers

AG
